Just one horse has ever been flagged during a college football game. That equine star, Rutgers’ Lord Nelson, died on Wednesday at 42 years old (126 in human years).
For 37 years, Rutgers’ Scarlet Knight mascot rode into games astride Lord Nelson. He famously got a piece of the action when he escaped and ran down the sideline during a 1994 game against Army at Giants Stadium, earning a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Rest in peace, Lord Nelson. We’re sure no one in horsey heaven will top that story.
